Chase Freedom 1st Quarter 5% Categories
Today, Chase Freedom announced the first rotating quarterly categories of 2023 for Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers. One category will make most cardholders happy, grocery stores. But you’ll also earn 5% on fitness club & gym memberships and Target. Let’s see how these bonus categories work.
How It Works
Starting January 1 through March 31, 2023, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases on the following:
- Grocery Stores:Â This category gives consumers the opportunity to earn cash back while cooking and dining at home.
- Fitness Club and Gym Memberships: For those who’ve set a fitness goal for the new year, earning cash back on fitness club and gym memberships can help cardmembers make healthy choices for themselves and their wallets.
- Target: A new quarterly category for Chase Freedom, Target offers the opportunity to save on everything from clothing to home goods, electronics, toys, and more. Qualifying grocery store purchases made at Target will only earn a total of 5%.
You can activate the new categories here, starting today. Must activate by March 14, 2023.
Current Bonus
New cardmembers approved for a Chase Freedom Unlimited or Freedom Flex credit card can also earn up to $800 in cashback: $200 after spending $500 on purchases during the first 3 months from account opening, plus up to $600 by earning 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target or Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.
Other Benefits
In addition to the rotating quarterly categories and new cardmember offers, Freedom Flex cardmembers also earn 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Freedom Flex cardmembers also receive World Elite Mastercard Benefits, including cell phone protection and discounts with Lyft, Boxed, Shoprunner, and more.
Conclusion
Chase Freedom’s 1st quarter bonus categories should be easy to maximize given the fact that Grocery Stores are included. You also have Target, but most readers probably get a 5% discount through the Target RedCard already. Gyms are probably a hassle to just switch payment method for just three months, unless you have a very expensive gym membership.
Don’t forget to activate the 1st Quarter bonus categories first, before you make any qualifying purchases, or you won’t earn the bonus cash. Do that now! There’s no reason not to.

What does “Qualifying grocery store purchases made at Target will only earn a total of 5%.” mean?
Isn’t everything already 5%?
On the Chase 5% activation landing page, that’s what they have. Clear as mud, then try digging into the FAQs. So believe what you will. Great marketing work Chase/Target.
FAQs state:
Purchases in the ‘Target’ category include purchases at Target stores, Target.com, Target branded gas stations operated by Target, and any other Target branded retail stores operated by Target. Please note, merchants operating within or on Target premises such as merchants that sell fast food, beauty services, and gas stations that are not Target branded are not included in this category. Target affiliate businesses and local delivery merchants are also not included in this category. Purchases in the Target category, including grocery purchases, will earn a total of 5% cash back.
No double dip (you don’t get 5% for target plus 5% for grocery)
