Chase Freedom Unlimited, $300 Bonus Plus 5X on Groceries and Gas
Chase is offering an improved bonus for its Freedom Unlimited credit card. Until now you could get a $200 bonus for spending $500 within three months, and that bonus has been increased to $300. But it gets even better if you apply at a Chase branch, as you can also get 5x on groceries and gas for the first year, up to $12,000. Let’s take a look at the offer.
The Offer
- Earn a $300 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.
- Earn 5% cash back on combined gas station and grocery store purchases (not including Target and Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year (that’s $600 cash back!).
- 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers.
Card Highlights
- Earn:
- 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
- 3% on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services.
- 3% on drugstore purchases
- Unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
- No annual fee.
Analysis
The $300 bonus is decent for a no-free credit card, but not great when compared to the best credit card offers out there. That is the main reason that most people get Chase Freedom cards after product changing from other premium Chase cards.
But the added bonus of 5X points on grocery purchases could make this worthwhile for some people. You earn a total of 5X points which works out to an extra 3.5X for the Chase Freedom Unlimited on $12,000 in purchases during the first year. Target or Walmart purchases are not included.
Most people probably have a card that earns bonus spend on groceries. But an added option for $12K spend and considering that you are earning Ultimate Rewards, is not bad at all. You could look at this as a 60K bonus with $12K spend, but you would also have to consider what you would earn on groceries with other cards that you already have in your wallet.
Conclusion
This bonus on the Chase Freedom Unlimited card is as good as it gets when it comes to a no fee credit card. If you have been thinking of applying, then this is probably the time to do it. However, you can still get better bonuses with other credit cards, even if they have an annual fee.
