Chase Freedom Unlimited 5X Groceries & Gas Offer

Chase is offering an improved bonus for its Freedom Unlimited credit card. It is only available in a Chase branch, but the Chase Freedom Unlimited 5x on groceries and gas offer has returned. The normal $200 / 20,000 Ultimate Rewards after $500 in spend offer is still attached as well.

The Offer

Here are the details on the Chase Freedom Unlimited 5x groceries and gas welcome offer:

  • Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.
  • Earn 5% cash back on combined gas station and grocery store purchases (not including Target and Walmart) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year (that’s $600 cash back!).
  • No annual fee

This is only available to sign up for in branch. We are not sure if it is coming to online applications or refer a friend offers.

Card Highlights

Here are some card highlights you get with the Chase Freedom Unlimited card:

  • Earn:
    • 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
    • 3% on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services.
    • 3% on drugstore purchases
    • Unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
  • No annual fee.

You can turn the cash back into Ultimate Rewards if you combine them with an Ultimate Rewards earning card with an annual fee. Those would include the Sapphire Reserve (increased 150K offer right now), Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cards.

Chase Freedom Unlimited 5X Groceries & Gas Offer

Analysis

The $200 bonus is decent for a no-free credit card, but not great when compared to the best credit card offers out there. That is the main reason that most people get Chase Freedom cards after product changing from other premium Chase cards.

But the added bonus of 5X points on grocery purchases could make this worthwhile for some people. You earn a total of 5X points which works out to an extra 3.5X (versus normal earning) for the Chase Freedom Unlimited on $12,000 in purchases during the first year. Target or Walmart purchases are not included.

Most people probably have a card that earns bonus spend on groceries. But an added option for $12K spend and considering that you are earning Ultimate Rewards, is not bad at all. You could look at this as a 60K bonus with $12K spend, but you would also have to consider what you would earn on groceries with other cards that you already have in your wallet.

Curious Case Of These Spending Welcome Offers From Chase

One thing to remember with these 5x on groceries and gas offers on the Chase Freedom cards is that every single time you earn 5x it is considered a welcome offer. That means that the 24 month clock to be eligible for a welcome offer resets each time. Just remember if you decide to open another one down the road for the welcome offer.

Chase Freedom Unlimited 5X Groceries & Gas Offer: Final Thoughts

This bonus on the Chase Freedom Unlimited card is as good as it gets when it comes to a no fee credit card. If you have been thinking of applying, then this is probably the time to do it. However, you can still get better bonuses with other credit cards, even if they have an annual fee.
