Chase Rolls Back Recently Implemented Restrictions on Credit Card Applications
Two weeks ago we covered a change in application rules for Chase credit cards. The issuer was automatically declining applicants with a Social Security Number (SSN) that is “valid for work only with DHS Authorization”. The rule was introduced in late July. People who have a non-restricted SSN are usually US citizens and Green Card holders. So those who do not fall under those two categories, were not be able to apply for any new Chase credit cards. The rule didn’t affect current cardholders as far as I know.
Chase Backtracks on Rule Change
If you were affected by these changes, there is some good news. Chase has backtracked and is now once again allowing people these restricted SSNs to apply for credit cards.
A data point on reddit provides information that comes from two reps at Chase lending services. They were able to confirm that as of August 20th, Chase has rolled back the policy and are now again approving people whose SSN card says “Valid for work only with DHS authorization”.
If you were initially denied for this reason in recent weeks, you should call the Chase recon line and get your application through.
Conclusion
This probably didn’t affect a large number of Chase customers, but it’s good to see Chase rolling back these changes at least for now. This also affected some people who were eligible, but couldn’t get a new SSN card because Social Security Administration offices are closed due to COVID-19.
If you were planning on applying or were recently denied, make sure you get your applications in now or call the recon line. The restriction might be put back in place in the future.

Thanks for the update on this topic! It didn’t make sense for Chase to deny new credit card applications for Canadians working in tech industry on H1B and TN visas.
