  1. I did this trip and had a fantastic time. The hotels were really nice, and I was shocked that they could possibly honor the promise of the nice hotels for the price. The flight was also fine, and we paid something like $80 each to have the seat y the bulkhead, which isn’t first class but DOES have limitless legroom. That said, the trip went from being about 1/2 and 1/2 free time to shopping to almost 100% shopping by the end. Or more accurately by the end you were just going from shopping to shopping and waiting to get to Shanghai. That said, I would totally do it again, but next time I would just take off and go for walks instead of going into perfume shops etc. Frankly, you aren’t handcuffed to the tour guide.

One tip: if you wind up with a tour guide named Peter, he was the worst, offensive, and made fun of people who were old or not thin. Run the other way and please file a complaint.

  2. Did a similar trip in ‘17, and it was amazing. You did have to attend some mandatory sales pitches, but even those were interesting (tea plantation, silk factory, etc.). There’s no hard sell. My ex is going back again in October, taking our daughter this time.

The hotels were awesome and had the best breakfast buffets I’ve ever seen.

    • Funny, I went in 2014 and had almost the exact opposite experience. Some people spent thousands on overpriced jade

      • We bought the $400 silk comforter set, I’ll admit, and definitely shouldn’t have. And there was a visit to an herbal place that bothered me a bit, but they let us wait in the lobby for that. Otherwise, seeing the silk worms working and cloisonné being made really did make up for the sales pitches, at least for us. Our guide was amazing, and handed us his card in English and Chinese, so when we took a cab and got lost we just had the driver call our guide, and then he was able to get us back to the hotel. Also, I was traveling with a vegetarian, and they wrote her a note to show at all restaurants explaining ‘no fish, no meat, no lard,’ etc.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

(We did this through Nexus Tours)

          • It was $499 for almost the exact same itinerary. My ex and daughter are going in October, and paid just $399 (for another tour company, I’m not sure which). Visa was extra, but they took care of it ($190 for a 10-year visa), and there was an additional $100 gratuity.

  3. I know you mentioned it, but I wanted to highlight it again. This is a shopping trip where they take you to fake and or overpriced places, far away from tourist sites and high pressure sales they crap out of you. This is basically a 24/7 timeshare presentation. Also you’ll have to tip the driver and guide so add that into the prices
