Choice Gas Card Promotion
You know that feeling. That feeling when you see a promotion and you think that there was a hidden gem mixed in there. That feeling when you think you saw something most people miss, or at least something the legal team didn’t think of. That is just what happened to me with the Choice gas card promotion that launched last week. It ended up that the feeling I had was nothing more than a fever dream. I still think it is worth sharing so that you get an idea of what I look for when these seemingly nothing burger promos roll out.
Offer Details
The Choice gas card promotion was not super exciting on its face, but here are the offer details:
When you hit the road this summer and stay twice, you’ll earn a $50 gas gift card to make it easier on your wallet the next time you fill up.
Just book by July 6, 2026 and stay May 13 – July 7, 2026 to earn enough Choice Privileges® reward points to redeem for a $50 gift card to select gas retailers by August 6.
As much as I appreciate the Choice Privileges program, I knew I would never have two paid nights at their hotel. The part that caught my eye with the promotion was that you would get the payout in points instead of an actual gift card. You get 8,000 points after two stays to be exact.
That Got My Spider Senses Tingling
After seeing that the promo came in the form of points I started kicking around the numbers in my head. Getting a $50 gas gift card for 8,000 points is a redemption of $0.00625 per point, which isn’t the worst. Then I started thinking about Wells Fargo offers a 1 to 2 transfer ratio to Choice (which Citi no longer does). That would be a net return of 1.25 cents per point at the 1 to 2 ratio. Another way to look at it is it would be 3.75% back on my spend in the 3x earning categories on my Autograph card that I have thanks to the Bilt breakup. That is a pretty decent improvement on the just 3% I would get if I cashed out the points at 1 cent a piece.
At this point I was also wondering what other gift cards Choice offered for redemption. Were they given out at the same rate? When I started poking around my account I noticed they had Amazon and Target gift cards also available at 8,000 points. Jackpot! Or, so I thought. When I clicked through the brands to redeem my points it showed that the 8,000 point redemptions were for a $25 card. Well, I still had the gas card option at least. Nope on a rope!

Digging Deeper Into The Terms
This is when I realized that I was a bit out over my skis and I had fully put the cart before the horse. Was that enough idioms in one sentence?
Anyway, I decided to spend some time with the Choice gas card promotion terms. It is what I should have done from the start anyway. That is when I noticed that the gas card redemption was at a special rate for the promotion, and that you could use it only four times during the promo dates.
Getting the redemption four times was better than nothing. It also said the possible redemption should open up a few days later, at the start of the promotion. Getting $200 in gas gift cards for 32,000 Choice points, or 16,000 Wells Fargo points, didn’t seem too shabby. Problem was that I had another failure to launch when the promo went live.
Choice Actually Thought This Through
I decided to reach out to Choice Privileges via direct message on X just to see if there was a known issue with the promo. I was just putting out feelers to see if this was something they had thought through (hoped not). That is when they told me that the reduced redemption rate would only become available after I finished my first two night stay and received the bonus points.
I have to admit that I am kind of impressed by this. I didn’t think their IT system would be able to pull this off. My assumption was that the promo rate would just open up to anyone with points in their account. Maybe earning it once unlocks the four redemption cap? I wouldn’t count on it at this point. Well done Choice, well done.
Choice Gas Card Promotion: Final Thoughts
At first I thought this Choice gas card promotion opened my eyes to an underrated redemption option. Once I actually read the full terms I thought there was still a limited time option for a pretty decent redemption. The problem was Choice had enough forethought to foil my plans. Often times these loyalty programs fail to do that, which is why I am kind of impressed by Choice right now.
