Citi ThankYou Spending Offer 5X
Citi has long been one of the more active banks when it comes to sending out targeted spending offers. Today they are sending out another round of these lucrative offers to cardholders including the ability to earn 5X points in very attractive categories. Let’s take a look.
The Deal
My wife received the following targeted Citi ThankYou spending bonus offer on her ThankYou Preferred card:
Use your card to earn 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent, up to 2,500 points, through 05/31/2019 on eligible purchases¹ you make at:
- Grocery Stores
- Gas Stations
- Drugstores
- Mass Transit & Commuter Transportation Vendors

- This offer starts upon enrollment and will end on 05/31/2019.
- Bonus points awarded with this offer are subject to a maximum of 2,500 additional points.
- This offer excludes purchases made at discount stores, balance transfers, cash advances, convenience checks, items returned for credit, fees, interest charges, and the purchase of merchandise or services from or the repayment of debts to banks, savings and loans, thrifts, and credit unions including the purchase of foreign currency, non-fiat currency, money orders, travelers checks, wire transfers checks (and similar cash-like transactions).
Despite the strange wording above, this deal works as an additional 4 points per dollar spent in each of the bonus categories. You can earn a total of 2,500 bonus points, meaning the cap is $625 in spend.
Are You Targeted?
This offer came to use via email, however Citi often sends out offers via regular mail as well. The email subject for this targeted ThankYou spending offer was, “Use Your Citi Card to Earn Bonus ThankYou® Points on Eligible Purchases: It’s So Simple to Activate!”
The email had a one-click link to activate the offer as well. So easy!
Citi ThankYou Spending Offer – Analysis
As I mentioned above, this works out to be an additional 4 points per dollar on $625 spend in these bonus categories. With the inclusion of grocery and drug stores on the bonus category list, we’ll easily be able to satisfy the requirements by purchasing discounted gift cards during promotions. This deal runs through May meaning Mother’s Day deals will be an option as well.
Conclusion
It’s always nice when a bank rewards you for using a card you already have. While the cap on this offer is small, it’s easy to hit, the categories are generous and ThankYou points are one of my go to currencies for transfers and bookings where it doesn’t make sense to use points otherwise. For those reasons I’ll take it!
