CDC Adds Spain and 7 Other Destinations to Highest Risk Category
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added eight more countries to its list of “very high” risk travel destinations this week. That includes the world’s 2nd most visited country, Spain.
In 2019, Spain ranked second to Spain for most international visitors according to figures from the UN’s World Tourism Organization.
Besides Spain, the CDC also added seven more destinations in the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East and Europe, to its “Level 4: Covid-19 Very High” category. Here are all the countries that were added this week:
- Bonaire
- Chad
- Finland
- Gibraltar
- Lebanon
- Monaco
- San Marino
- Spain
The three tiny European destinations of Gibraltar, Monaco and San Marino were all previously placed in CDC’s “unknown” risk category. Chad was “Level 1” and the rest of the countries moved up from “Level 3”.
The top risk category, “Level 4: Very high level of COVID-19”, now has 88 destinations. Americans are warned that they should “avoid travel” to countries in this category. Anyone who must travel should be fully vaccinated first, the agency advises.
Countries in the Level 4 category have had more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days. You can see the full list on the CDC website.
