Data Breach Affected 142 Million MGM Customers
In February 2020 a data breach was reported at MGM Resorts, revealing personal data of about 10.6 million of its customers. Some of the most famous guests mentioned in the hacked data were celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey.
However, the breach has actually affected way more customers than it was previously thought. The MGM Resorts database that was hacked contained the personal data of 142 million customers.
To make things worse, all that data was available at first for sale, and now for free. In some dark web marketplaces the database with guests’ information was selling for up to $2,900. Now it’s being shared on Telegram and available to download for free, Hackread.com reports.
The information that was accessed belongs to MGM Hotels guests at all properties, and includes:
- Full names
- Dates of birth
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
While no payment information was accessed, or addresses, the limited personal data can sill be used for phishing email scams.
