This global pandemic really is unprecedented in our lifetimes. No matter how you feel about the virus and the politics of it, no doubt many Americans are interested in finding out if they somehow were exposed in the past. Antibody tests have been plagued with inaccuracies and are in limited supply (plus they don’t guarantee anything), but there is a simple and free way to get an antibody test if you still want one.

COVID-19 Antibody Test By Donating Blood

The other day I saw a post from a friend who was donating blood. He shared that donating blood was a free ticket to an antibody test. Since they will be testing your blood anyway, they’ll check you for COVID-19 antibodies. You help the community and get an antibody test. Win win!

And this is far from a secret. Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) and Red Cross advertise the free COVID-19 antibody test on their websites.

Donate Blood COVID Antibody Test – My Experience

While I don’t think I was exposed to COVID-19, I was traveling quite a bit during the time when it was known to be out in the wild, so there is a small chance I did catch the virus. Either way my main motivation is to donate blood and help with blood shortages, but I’m happy that I’ll get to find out whether I have COVID antibodies or not.

As for the donation itself, it was fairly easy. I have donated before and I was able to schedule a same day appointment at one of Vitalant’s donation centers very close to my house. I answered almost all of the prerequisite questions ahead of time online and was given a fast track for my appointment. That made things go much quicker.

When we arrived both my wife Jasmine and I were temperature checked at the door. Face coverings were required and the entire process took about 45 minutes including the donation segment. We were not asked nearly as many questions as normal thanks to the fast track done online. Super easy!

Donate Blood COVID Antibody Test – Bottom Line

If you are interested in getting a COVID-19 antibody test, then look no further than your local blood donation center. While I can’t say that every blood donation organization across the country is giving free antibody tests, Vitalant and Red Cross are both giving them for people who donate. For me the experience was fairly simple and efficient plus I helped the community. That’s a win! Now I’ll await my results.

  1. It’s to bad you had to add the false narrative about antibodies. It also provides T cell protection. To date there is no proof that anyone has gotten the virus twice.

  2. New York Blood Ceter didn’t offer antibody testing as of June 8, don’t now it that’s changed since.
