Earn 2X on Debit Purchases with Amex Rewards Checking

American Express has launched a promotion for its Rewards Checking account, offering bonus points for debit purchases.

Starting today through July 31, new and existing American Express® Rewards Checking Debit Card Holders will earn 4X Membership Rewards® points for every $2 spent.

Normally you only earn 1 point for every $2 spent with this debit card. This limited-time offer is available up to $1,500 in eligible debit card purchases.

All debit cards in an account are eligible for the additional points but will count towards a single $1,500 maximum. After you reach the $1,500 maximum, you will continue to earn 1 Membership Rewards® point for every $2 of eligible Debit Card purchases.

Some purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases (and therefore not qualify for the offer) if the official purchase date differs from the date you made the purchase.

Earning 2X points on purchases is not that exciting, but it is quite rare for debit purchases. So this can be a good opportunity if you need to make a payment where credit cards are not accepted, or if there’s a fee when using credit cards and not debit cards.

  1. Does this code as debit (and thus) is the fee a flat <$3 rate on payusatax/official payments/pay1040?
In the past, with products like Bluebird, Amex Prepaid Target, etc, the rails were actually Amex credit cards with a different fee structure. They couldn't do pin-only transactions in a store. The free ATM withdrawls were via cash advance coding, but with fees suppressed.
