eBay Gift Card Policy Primer
eBay has made a lot of changes to their gift card and eBay Bucks policies over the next month. Since much of this information was learned in stages, it is sort of spread out. People have been getting confused as to what exactly the policies are, so I thought I would put this quick Primer together to make things easier.
Note: These rules are in effect as of October 1, 2016 unless otherwise noted.
Buying Gift Cards & Cash Equivalents
- You WILLÂ NOT earn eBay Bucks.
- You WILL NOTÂ earn portal cashback through some portals. Check portal terms before making a purchase.
- You CANNOT use eBay gift cards to purchase. (After October 13)
Buying eBay Gift Cards

Buying Most Other Items

- You WILLÂ earn portal cashback in most categories, although you should check the restrictions on each portal before purchasing since eBay changes these regularly.

Hopefully this helps to clarify things a bit.

[…] According to Gift Card Wiki many of these cards are about breakeven if you can sell them. I personally have a bulk relationship with a company who buys all of the above cards (except JCPenney) for slightly more than my cost. So I will sell them online, make a few dollars and more importantly earn a decent chunk of points. Even if you don’t have a bulk relationship with a company, there is still some opportunity, but defintiely not as much as before the recent eBay changes. […]

WIth the eBay GC changes, do you have an update on how to check your account for partially, unredeemed eBay gift cards.
I have a situation where a purchase was refunded back to the gift card that I used but I don’t know which one and I shredded the card once drained. Not a big amount but I can’t seem to navigate a way to ask eBay the info.
Thanks.
Which purchases will still be eligible for 5x UR points?
Just gift card purchases from PayPal Digital Gifts.
Its so funny because I was creating something like this because of the all the changes on different dates. now you put it together for us. THANK YOU MAN!
What about purchasing Third Party gift cards with eBay Bucks?
Should be fine as of now….probably will change at some point knowing them
Basically Ebay sucks now and should be avoided unless it is 5-10% less than everywhere else!
A fair assessment.
