More European Airlines Cut Flights Due to Staffing Shortages
Air travel this summer has been full or delays and cancellations. Understaffed airlines and airports have struggled to keep up with spiking demand, leading to reduced schedules, cancellations, delays and even total shutdowns.
Now the latest airline to cut flights are in Europe, namely KLM, Lufthansa and Wizz Air. The Dutch arm of Air France-KLM plans to cancel as many as 20 round-trip flights to European destinations every day through the end of August, Bloomberg reports. Deutsche Lufthansa AG on the other hand will cancel 770 flights in the coming week. Wizz Air, a Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier, is cutting 5% of its capacity over the peak summer travel period.
“We will also strongly restrict the sale of remaining seats on KLM and KLM Cityhopper flights to European destinations,” said KLM in its statement. “This will free up space for customers who are rebooked if their flight is cancelled.” The airline cites staff shortages as the reason for these cuts. This is just the latest move in a crazy summer for KLM.
Lufthansa cuts are also due to similar reasons. The recent schedule cuts bring the total number of flights scrapped this summer to about 3,900. The new cancellations, which mostly affect evening flights, are aimed at preventing disruption of other connections.
