European Union Will Welcome Americans Again this Summer
Americans who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 should be able to visit the European Union this summer. The information comes from Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday.
She said that the union’s 27 members would “accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved” by the European Medicines Agency. The agency has approved the three vaccines used in the United States currently, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. “The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines,” von der Leyen said. “This will enable free movement and travel to the European Union.”
The EU largely shut down nonessential travel more than a year ago when the pandemic broke out around the world. European Commission’s president did not say exactly when travel could resume for Americans looking to visit Europe. It is also not completely clear how European countries will determine if travelers have been fully vaccinated.
There have been talks of vaccine passports for months now. European Union countries also agreed this month to launch COVID-19 travel passes that would permit people who have been vaccinated against the disease, recovered from an infection or have tested negative to travel more easily. But nothing has been finalized just yet.
While the European Union is looking to bring back Americans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning them not to travel to much of Europe or the world, at least not yet. The CDC warns Americans not to go Greece, Italy, Spain or even the United Kingdom, where more than half of the population has already received a first vaccine dose.
