Freedom Flex Adds New Top-Spend Category for Q4

The Chase Freedom Flex card is already an impressive product as far as no-fee cards go. It has 5% quarterly rotating categories, and it earns 3X on dining and drugstore purchases.

Now cardholders will have yet another way to rack up more points during the holiday season. Chase has introduced a top-spend category for Q4 that will also earn 5% back on up to $1,500 purchases. That means that you can earn up to 9X on some categories. Let’s see how it works.

Update 1/25/22: The 6,000 points are now showing in the earning on next statement period section as you can see in the image below. There doesn’t appear to be any info on it in the recent transactions section so just check the top of your Ultimate Rewards account on your Chase Freedom Flex card.

Some Of These Offers May Have Changed

The Offer

This quarter, cardmembers who activate their Q4 bonus categories will automatically earn 5% total cash back (4% in addition to their unlimited 1% cash back) on up to $1,500 in the eligible rewards category where they spend the most through Dec. 31, 2021. This offer is separate from your quarterly bonus category offer, but automatically added to your account when you activate your Q4 bonus categories.

Eligible rewards categories include:

  • travel (including transit)
  • dining
  • home improvement stores
  • select streaming services
  • select live entertainment
  • gas stations
  • drugstores
  • fitness clubs
  • grocery stores (not including Target and Walmart purchases).

Your total spend from purchases made in your top spend category will be calculated at the end of the offer period, December 31, 2021. Allow up to 8 weeks after the end of the offer period for your bonus cash back to post to your account. Learn more about Chase Freedom Flex’s Top spend category bonus here.

Stack with Other Categories

This top-spend category gets better when stacked with current 3% categories, or PayPal, which is part of the 5% Q4 rotating bonus category.

Purchases made in your top spend category through PayPal will earn a total of 9% cash back. Also, since Chase Freedom Flex already earns 3% cash back on dining and drugstore purchases, you can now earn a total of 7% cash back with the top spend category bonus.

Conclusion

This offer is available to all Freedom Flex cardholders. The old Freedom card is not eligible, but you can always product change to the Freedom Flex if you want to jump on this points earning opportunity.

This is great timing with holiday shopping, and it gets even better for those who have more than one Freedom Flex card.

  1. I tried to downgrade my CSP card to a Freedom Flex, but Chase said I could switch because the CSP was VISA card and the Freedom Flex was a Mastercad.

  2. The FAQ page says, “This offer is separate from your quarterly bonus category offer, but automatically added to your account when you activate your Q4 bonus categories.”

But of course I have already activated my Q4 bonus, as has everybody else who is paying attention to their category cards. So… what makes you think that this offer is in effect for anybody except new cardholders (who are the only ones who should be activating quarterly bonuses after the quarter has started)?

  3. I see that they stated 9% stacking of points for paypal, but any idea on if Walmart purchases will stack 9% too?

  4. My Chase Freedom Flex card just shows Walmart & Paypal for 5x bonus, the same as my Freedom card. I don’t see anything about the additional categories that you mention.
