Google Wallet Adds Support for Digital IDs in 3 More States
Google has expanded a feature that allows Android users to add their state ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet. Those in Arizona, Colorado and Georgia can now store a digital version of their ID in the app.
Google first announced Google Wallet in May 2022, promising to soon enable digital IDs. But since then, only Maryland has supported the feature. Google first enabled the option in Maryland in June. Now with the three additions, this feature is available in four states in total.
If you live in any of those states, you can add your ID to Google Wallet right now. The process is simple. Just open the app, click the Add to Wallet button, select ID card, and tap Get Started. From there, select your state and follow the steps to add your ID card.
Digital IDs that are added to Google Wallet are encrypted, so no one will have access to personal information stored there unless you choose to share it. Authentication such as a fingerprint unlock is needed to access the ID. You’ll also be able to select which information fields you share when you present your digital ID. If your phone is stolen or lost, your digital ID can be deleted with a remote data erase.
For now, you’ll be able to use a digital ID stored in Google Wallet at TSA PreCheck lines at select airports. To use your digital ID at TSA PreCheck, make sure Bluetooth is on. Hold your phone over the TSA reader. TSA will take your picture to authenticate your identity. You then tap ‘Continue’ on your phone and continue through security. Google Wallet notes that travelers must present a physical ID if requested by TSA.
Google plans to enable more ways digital IDs later this year, such as for renting a car through an app.
