All About Green Monday

Happy Green Monday everyone! Don’t know what Green Monday is? Well I don’t blame you. It is largely a made up term by retailers to describe the third busiest online shopping day of the year behind only Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Here is how Wikipedia describes this shopping holiday:

The term was coined by eBay to describe its best sales day in December, usually the second Monday of December. Green Monday is defined more specifically by business research organization comScore as the last Monday with at least 10 days prior to Christmas. In 2009, $854 million was spent online in the US on Green Monday, with sales in 2011 reaching $1.133 billion. In 2012, Green Monday topped out at $1.27 billion, up 13% from 2011 and the third heaviest online sales day for the season behind Cyber Monday and Dec. 4, 2012 (which had no marketing tie-in), according to comScore.

Green Monday Amazon Gift Card Sale

So now you know why every online retailer is trying to make you part ways with your hard earned greenbacks today. The deals don’t seem to be coming like they did on Cyber Monday, but they are still around. Amazon actually has a decent sale on a Nordstrom gift card bundle.

The Deal:

There are actually three bundles available offering a $100 Nordstrom gift card with a $20 Amazon gift card for $100. The difference simply is in the theming of the card/package.

My Take: Normally I wouldn’t be excited, but this is a nice way to generate $100 in spend and possibly make a profit. If you consider the Amazon gift card to be as good as cash (which many people do), you can sell the Nordstrom gift card for about $85 and keep the Amazon card. In other words, you are getting free spend and paying $15 for a $20 Amazon gift card.

Is It Worth It: I think so, because it appears you can purchase each of the three bundles in one transaction for $300 total. (HT: Debbie in the comments.) You can also order each bundle a total of 3 times for a total of 9 bundles overall. In other words this is semi-scalable, but be careful since purchase rates of Nordstrom cards may drop.

Other Gift Card Deals

Throughout today Amazon is going to be holding some other gift card deals for Prime Members. Most notably you’ll be able to get 20% off of a Panera gift card and discounts on Shoney’s and Build a Bear cards. You can find all of the gift card discounts on this page.

Conclusion

Hopefully this little history lesson helped to put some perspective on today. Yes it is another made up day full of hype, but hopefully that will result in some decent deals for all of us! Happy shopping!

  1. I tried purchasing a non-Amazon gift card on amazon.com yesterday using my Amazon gift card balance. Sadly, Amazon does not allow this.
