The Henry Ford Museum Review – BOA Museums on Us Participant
We, at Miles to Memories, have talked about Bank of America’s Museums on Us program quite a bit in the past. It may be the most undervalued credit/debit card perk out there. I have previously reviewed the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, also a member of Museums on Us.
It is a great perk because it comes with any Bank of America credit or debit card. Even ones without annual fees. We use it 3-4 times per year and our favorite place to visit is The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan. My son loves it and it is only 30 minutes a way from our house.
The museum is a lot more than just vehicles. It offers sections on all forms of transportation and some other very cool things, I’m looking at you Dymaxion House.
The museum usually has an extra cost exhibit or two that rotate every few months. Henry Ford Museum also has a 4K giant screen movie theater with mostly educational/kid friendly movies.
Pricing
Unless you are visiting solo or everyone in your group has a Bank of America credit/debit card the prices are going to be as follows:
- 4 and under – Free
- 5-11 year olds – $17.25
- 12-61 year olds – $23
- 62+ year olds – $21
But if you go to a Meijer store before your trip you can buy discounted tickets from the service desk. Their prices are as follows:
- Adult Ticket – $17.25
- You Ticket – $13.25
Review
This will be mostly a picture review and I will break it down into sections. These pictures are just a small part of the museum. It is a very large place and has a lot of interactive elements as well.
Cars
When you think of Henry Ford you think of cars so let’s start there. They have a collection of cars from every era. The museum has race cars, trucks, service vehicles, regular cars etc. Pretty much every kind of vehicle is covered, even some farming equipment.
President Vehicles
They have a pretty large collection of former United States President limousines. It is pretty interesting to see how security on the vehicles changed over the years.
Trains
This country was build on the back of the railroad system so of course there are a ton of trains. They even have an elaborate train set on display that the kids love.
Airplanes
The Henry Ford Museum has a pretty cool airplane section. They have some displays that have recordings, videos of trick pilots, and even a paper airplane competition center.
Neon Signs
The Henry Ford Museum isn’t all about transportation they also have a pretty cool collection of antique neon signs.
Other Historical Displays
The Henry Ford Museum has some other historical items on display that are more about the growth of the United States. And a pretty cool Oscar Meyer Wienermobile! They also have Wienie Whistles in the gift shop 🙂
Gifts
They have a couple of very nice gift shops but I preferred the plastic molds you could get for a few dollars throughout the museum.
Food
There are a few restaurants on site. I use the word restaurant very lightly, they are very limited. The old diner has a very cool set up but only serves cold sandwiches. They also have a hot dog restaurant by the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile but it is overpriced and has a very limited menu. It is best to eat before coming or wait until you are finished.
Conclusion
What I listed above is probably only 60% of the Henry Ford Museum, it is pretty massive. You can easily spend 3-4 hours walking around checking everything out. What I like about the Henry Ford Museum is that it is fun for kids and adults alike. That is pretty rare to find, especially in a museum.
The ticket prices are not cheap, even if you get the discounted tickets from Meijer, so the Museum on Us program helps defer some of that cost. My son and I have been a few times and we always find something new we missed the time before.
I am sad that I was unable to grab some pictures of the Dymaxion House this last time, my phone died. It is my favorite exhibit in the museum.
They even offer weddings inside the museum right underneath the massive airplane…pretty cool!
