Korean Air SkyPass will Eliminate Free Stopovers in Korea

Korean Air SkyPass is a great frequent flyer program and one of their perks has long been the option for a free stopover in South Korea. This is allowed for one-way award fares currently, but it is about to change.

Complimentary stopovers in South Korea on award reservations will go away on July 1, 2020. After that dat, you’ll only be allowed up to 24 hours for transit. Longer stops with be priced as two separate award flights.

Here’s what the notice on the Korean Air website says:

Required mileage will be calculated for each flight based on the redemption chart from/to Korea when ticketing for a journey with a stopover.

When a stopover occurs after the start of your journey, mileage will be calculated again for each flight based on the redemption chart from/to Korea and any related fees will be charged.

Conclusion

Sad to see another airline eliminate free stopovers. But at least you have some time to book before the change goes into effect. Stopovers basically let you add another vacation to the same flights, in this case in Korea.

  1. With Korean no longer available as a Chase UR transfer partner, the ability to rack up miles is crippled to the point that the program is no longer useful for most people
