Amex FHR Vegas Changes Are a Huge Bummer for Most of Us

Las Vegas Properties Changes to FHR Benefits

Access to the The Fine Hotels & Resorts is one of the many incredible Benefits of the American Express Platinum Card. (Click here: Platinum Benefit’s Guide.) The FHR program is a collection of luxury hotels around the world that give you awesome perks when booking a stay through Amex Travel. Las Vegas happens to be a favorite for FHR bookings due to a plethora of nice 4 and 5 star properties at attractive prices.

Guide: Using & Maximizing American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts in Las Vegas

As of January 1, it appears that all of the Las Vegas resorts participating in FHR have switched the $100 benefit to a spa credit. This is a bummer for most of us because we were able to use the credit to keep essential costs (AKA food) down. Instead it looks like you’ll have a $100 credit to the spa, which isn’t much in Vegas. Here’s an example of using the food and beverage credits for max value.

FHR Benefits

In addition to competitive rates, booking made through Fine Hotels & Resorts receive the following benefits:

  • Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • Daily breakfast for two people
  • Guaranteed 4pm late check-out
  • Noon check-in, when available
  • Complimentary In-Room Wi-Fi
  • Unique amenity valued at US$100, such as a spa or food and beverage credit.

FHR is still an awesome program but this change definitely decreases the value proposition for many of us. Everyone has to eat while in Vegas but not everyone loves hanging out at overpriced spas when there are a ton of other things to do.

  1. Where is Amex FHR good? With Chase, Virtuoso, Hyatt Prive and other ways to get benefits at high end hotels, I have to say I disagree with your statement “The Fine Hotels & Resorts is one of the many incredible Benefits of the American Express Platinum Card. ”

I don’t find the FHR to be so incredible as you say…. I would love to be proven wrong though.

  2. Select Hotels continues to offer $100 F&B credit on most LAS properties into 2019, and may be charged to any card. Chase, Virtuoso and others may as well.

  3. Seriously? I wouldn’t even come close to say this is a Huge Bummer. A single hotel? Even a few other hotels? In one city? For those of us who could not care less about Vegas, this is totally irrelevant.

    • I gotta ask if you don’t care about Vegas then why read this? For people that do care about Vegas it is a blow since this was often one of the better deals in the city.

  4. Here is what I can say about Vegas. I go there alot for business and have gone there many times over the years. Its a huge rip off all around. Especially the strip. Hotels have always been known for mice type fine print on programs , benefits, perks etc. They always try to reneg on virtually any program. So this doesnt surprise me. The spa services are way overpriced so $100 is nothing. Understand there will be strings attached to that $100 discount as well. They will make it challenging to use. The prices even charged for simple things can sometimes run higher than Europe with exchange rate. They have electronic boards in the food courts so they can raise pricing in seconds. How can two hotdog and fries at Nathans run more than $18.00? Drink extra. Breakfast used to be cheap. LOL you can spend $20.00 or more per head for a few eggs and coffee. The next downturn in the economy- Vegas will feel the pain. The money they make is more on food, room than on gambling. And for the most park on the strip no matter the name the base room is the same crummy room just a different room rate and resort fee.

  5. Good post but terrible news. Considering what these hotels charge for spa services, you’re often much better off going off property. Another not-so-stealth devaluation.
