Las Vegas Restaurants Are Adding a Covid-19 Surcharge

Las Vegas is open! Shawn was there for opening day and more casinos are expected to open soon on the Strip. But with the reopening of casinos and restaurants, some people are also noticing a surprise charge on their bills. Restaurants are adding a COVID-19 surcharge.

TravelZork posted an image on Twitter showing a surcharge of 4% on the bill at Mon Ami Babi at Paris Las Vegas. A note at the bottom of the receipt, explaining the charge, says:

To help offset restrictions on our business resulting from the COVID-19 crisis, a 4% surcharge has been added to all guest checks. If you would like this removed, please let us know.

And sure enough, after asking the waitress to remove the charge, she actually did. She also added that she get “nothing from this fee”.

Conclusion

This seems to be the case at some other places in Las Vegas as well, but not everywhere. So if you are visiting Las Vegas soon, make sure to look over your bill if you are still sober, and ask them to remove the surcharge. You can give it to the server directly as an extra tip.

  1. One hotel in the Fremont area offered a no resort fee rate. Weekday rate is $69 per day. So they screw you coming and going. At least when Organized Crime ran things, there were bargains.

  2. Saddest part of all is they are asking the consumer (who also has likely been affected financially by Covid ) and yet they come to Las Vegas to welcome you back and you Upcharge them ? Shame on you Lettuce!

  3. This is bullshit and greedy. First they (Travel Industry) added fuel surcharge when gas prices increased and never removed them despite the fuel prices being record low. Now this, Dump everything on the customer!!

  4. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just increase the prices slightly across all items rather than intentionally drawing attention to this ridiculous charge? They’re charging this fee as if they’ve been singled out when ENTIRE WORLD is dealing with this.

  5. I would never pay that price for that beer. That’s problem one. Of course if you spent $100+ for drinks and a couple appetizers, I guess you have money to burn and $4 ain’t that much more…..

  6. MAG is a huge tourist trap. I say avoid if you can…but its always packed.

Food is okay and service spotty. They charged for everything. Waiter kept pouring juice even if the glass is half full, and then charged for a full glass.

I say avoid if you can…but its always packed.

Got ripped off there once and have no plans to every go back again.

  7. Before everyone gets irate and blames Las Vegas or Paris please let me clarify the situation. Mon Ami Gabi is part of a chain owned by a company called Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. This restuarant is
independent and not directly affiliated with or controlled by Paris (or by Caesars Entertainment). They are basically renting the space. In fact to show you how removed this restaurant is from the rest of the Paris dining establishments it is the only dining outlet listed on their website at which you can’t either earn or redeem (or both) Caesars Reward Credits. If you don’t believe me bring up the website for Paris to review dining options then compare that to the Caesars Rewards site regarding earning and redeeming Reward Credits (you can sort by location, casino and type of establishment). I frankly doubt Paris approves of the charge but really can’t do much about it.

Basically this is a corporate move by the parent of this restaurant and it is misleading to tie this into either Paris or Las Vegas in general.

BTW – I feel such add on fees are ridiculous. I have no problem with restaurants (and other businesses) raising prices due to the increased cost of goods, capacity restrictions and additional staffing required for cleaning or oversight but just raise your damn prices!

  8. Vegas insulting their own and visitors? As if $7.50 for a beer and $12 for a cheap-ass glass of fortified wine isn’t enough. These people, in of all places, are acting like their city was the only one affected by the pandemic. Pathetic! Happy to stay away!
