New Lufthansa And Cathay Pacific Code Share Agreement Starting April 26th

Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific announced today a new code share agreement that will allow them to sell tickets on some of each other’s routes, expanding the partnership in which the airlines already cooperate on freight flights. The announcement comes at a time when Lufthansa is battling Gulf carriers in Asia and when Cathay has recently announced its first full-year loss since 2008.

The deal is the first code share agreement for Lufthansa with an airline that is part of a rival alliance. Lufthansa is a founding member of the Star Alliance while Cathay is in the rival Oneworld alliance.

The new partnership will make it easier for Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines passengers to travel to Australia and New Zealand from April 26. Lufthansa will codeshare on Cathay flights from Hong Kong to four destinations in those countries.

Additionally Cathay Pacific passengers will be able to buy tickets for Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian flights from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Zurich, reaching 14 new European destinations.

Per Reuters, Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr said that “there are no plans to set up a full joint venture with Cathay Pacific”.

What are your thoughts? Is it surprising that Lufthansa & Cathay would go outside of their alliances for such a partnership? Will we see more of this in the future?

  1. Surprising, given the fact both carriers are founding core members of Star and oneworld alliances, but welcome. I’d like to see this trend continue, perhaps American can strike up an outside alliance with SQ.
