Marriott Data Breach, 500 Million Customers Had Personal Data Stolen

Marriott International revealed Friday that up to 500 million guests’ information may have been accessed as part of a breach of its Starwood guest reservation database.

The company said that credit card numbers and expiration dates of some guests may have been taken. For as many as two-thirds of those affected data exposed could include mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date and communication preferences.

For the other guests, the information was limited to name and sometimes other data such as mailing address, email address or other information.

Marriott said it first received an alert in September regarding the possible hacking. As part of an investigation, the company discovered there had been unauthorized access since 2014.

If you have stayed at their SPG brands between 2014 and September 10, 2018, then you could be affected by this. Marriott is expected to start sending email notifications to those who may have been affected today.

Marriott has also set up a website and call center for anyone who thinks that they are at risk.
