Mexico to Introduce New Social Distancing Rules for Beaches
Mexico is expected to introduce new “beach rules” to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Federal authorities will publish new rules on the use of beaches next week. State and municipal governments will be required to enforce the rules for the foreseeable future regardless of the local coronavirus situation, Mexico News Daily reports.
Rodrigo Hernández Aguilar, the director of Zofematac, the federal office of maritime land zones and coastal environments, told Mexican newspaper Milenio that people shouldn’t come within four meters of others while on the sand or in the water. That is about 13 feet, more than double the distance recommended by the CDC.
Masks will not be required on the sand or in the water. However people will have to wear them at beach entry points and in any common areas.
The new rules will establish a limit of 40 people per 1,000 square meters of beach space. Recreational and sporting activities will also be banned on beaches.
