Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review

This past summer I took a siblings and sons trip with my sister to New York City.  This was the trip that American Airlines did their best to sabotage.  We planned on spending the first night in the Intercontinental Times Square to hit everything near Central Park.  Then we would head to the Millennium Hilton New York downtown for the second night.  This would put us near that 9/11 Memorial, Freedom Tower, the Statue of Liberty etc. so we could use our CityPASS. Plus the Millennium Hilton New York Downtown is one of the few NYC hotels with a pool.  That was a plus for the two small boys with us.

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review – Location

The Millennium Hilton is of course located Downtown as the name suggests.  It is across the street from the Oculus which makes travel around Manhattan a breeze.  It is also only a block from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, St. Paul’s Chapel, and the Freedom Tower.  A few blocks south is Battery Park, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, and the launch point for many Statue of Liberty tour boats.  Even though the hotel is in the financial sector the location is perfect for many tourist activities.

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review – Check In

Originally I had booked 1 room with two beds for the 4 of us.  Once I saw how small the beds were I added a second room to booking.  The cost was 55,000 points a night and the cash rate was around $250.  The prices vary widely depending on the time of year. I was also able to use Hilton’s check in feature and select my rooms.  My two bed room had a so so view but I was able to select a Freedom Tower facing room for my sister’s room (her views below).

Check in went smoothly.  The lobby is tiny, even by New York City standards.  There is almost no room to form a line.  The lobby looks modern and there is a bar/lounge area off to the right of the front desk.  Because of my Diamond status, from the Aspire card, I was given breakfast vouchers for the following morning.  Check in went fairly smooth and one of the two rooms was ready so we dropped out stuff of in there.

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review – Room

I mentioned that the lobby looked remodeled and updated.  The rooms were another story.  The good thing about them was that they were very spacious for NYC, especially the Financial District.  I have had a sink the size of my shoe at a Holiday Inn downtown. The size difference was noticeable compared to the nicer Intercontinental Times Square too. My 6 year old son even made mention of this.

The room was showing the wear and tear though.  The carpet was ripping at the seams in the middle of the room and there were stains on the bathroom wall (looked like nail polish).  The furniture all together was chipped and worn.  The beds were smaller but fairly comfortable.

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review – Amenities

As mentioned above there was a lobby lounge area but not much else.  It is New York City so you don’t wanna be in your hotel much anyway.  The breakfast was served in a restaurant on the third floor I believe.  I was not able to partake since we had an early flight but my sister took some photos for me.  As far as I can tell the space is only used for breakfast.

The other main amenity is of course the pool.  It is a pretty standard pool and nothing sexy or special like the Park Hyatt NYC pool.  But it is still nice to be able to get into a pool after a long day of walking…and great for kids.

Millennium Hilton New York Downtown Review – Conclusion

Overall I think the Millennium Hilton New York Downtown is a pretty good option for anyone who needs to be downtown.  It is close to everything that visitors find important when in the area.  And being right next door to a major public transportation hub, the Oculus, makes it easy to get anywhere.  We hopped a subway up to Central Park and the ride took around 10 minutes one way.

I will say the rooms are a little dated and the hotel doesn’t have a ton of amenities outside of the pool.  If you are looking for a more modern place then the Andaz Wall Street or Conrad NYC may be better points options for you.

The rooms are very spacious though and the pool makes this a perfect location for people with children.  If location and space matter most to you on your trip then this is a pretty good option overall.
