New Chase Freedom Unlimited Offer Gets Even Better with $100 Referral Bonus

Chase recently released new improved offers for the two Freedom credit cards. The new offers get you a $200 welcome bonus and you will also earn 5x on groceries for the first year, up to $12,000. However you can do even better if you apply for the Chase Freedom Unlimited through a referral link. You can also net a $100 referral bonus. Let’s look at the offer, and how you can generate a referral link to invite your friends or family members.

The Offer

  • Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases made with your Chase Freedom Unlimited Card in your first 3 months from account opening.
  • Earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target or Walmart purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.
  • Earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases.
  • 0% Intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases
  • No annual fee.

Referral Bonus & How to Generate Links

In addition to the welcome bonus, there is also an added incentive for applying for this card since the same offer is available through referrals. The referrer can earn $100 cash back (actually 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points) for each friend who gets the card, up to $500 cash back each calendar year.

To generate your own referral links, go to this Chase referral page that shows all the cards that are available for referrals. Click ‘Refer Friends Now’ under the Chase Freedom Unlimited card and then enter your last name, zip and last four digits of your Chase Freedom Unlimited card.

Keep in mind that referral bonuses may result in miscellaneous income received from Chase and we may be required to send you, and file with the IRS, a Form 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income) or Form 1042-S (Foreign Person’s U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding).

Analysis

The $200 bonus is small compared to most other welcome bonuses that we are used to. That is the reason that most people get Chase Freedom cards after product changing from other premium Chase cards.

But add the $100 or 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points earned through a referral and the bonus 5X earning on grocery purchases, and this offer gets more interesting. You earn a total of 5X points which would be an extra 3.5X for the Chase Freedom Unlimited Card on $12,000 in purchases during the first year. Target or Walmart purchases are not included.

Most people probably have a card that earns bonus spend on groceries. But an added option for $12K spend and considering that you are earning Ultimate Rewards, is not bad at all. You could look at this as an added 60K bonus with $12K spend, but you would also have to consider what you would earn on groceries with other cards that you already have.

Conclusion

These bonuses on the Chase Freedom cards are as good as it gets when it comes to a no fee card. If you have been thinking of applying, then this is the time to do it, especially for the Chase Freedom Unlimited that has the same offer available through referrals. With the 5K bonus on groceries, the signup bonus and the referral bonus, you would end up with a total of 90,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $12,000 within the first year.

  1. Ummm, doesn’t chase look down on self referrals as much as amex? Risking a shutdown for $100 just doesn’t seem worth it.
