New Zealand Reopening Borders After Two Years of Isolation
For almost two years, New Zealand’s borders have been shut. Apart from a short travel bubble with Australia, New Zealand has been in almost total isolation during the pandemic. Even few people who managed to secure entry into the country during that period had to deal two weeks of quarantine in a hotel room, paid out of pocket.
But now New Zealand is reopening again. The country is first welcoming back citizens and permanent residents, a much awaited decision that will reunite families. Others will be allowed to enter soon through a step-by-step plan announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
The border opened to New Zealanders and eligible travelers arriving from Australia on Monday. Today, the border opened up for all other New Zealanders. New Zealand’s government will consider reopening dates for tourists and other visitors in the coming months.
Americans planning to visit New Zealand are looking at July of this year as a possible date to visit the country.
“We are thrilled to be one step closer to being able to welcome back international visitors to New Zealand and showcasing the best New Zealand has to offer,” Sarah Handley, General Manager for Americas & Europe for Tourism New Zealand said, as reported by Travel Pulse. “We look forward to keeping industry and our partners closely updated on New Zealand’s plan to reconnect with the world”.
New Zealand first announced a staged border reopening plan back in November. But those plans were delayed due to the spike in new COVID-19 cases around the world, because of the Omicron variant.
