Renew U.S. Passport Online

The State Department has relaunched a portal for online passport renewal service. That means that travelers can skip the old process of mailing documents and and can upload them digitally instead.

The online renewal process of currently restricted to a daily limit of applications, starting at 1 p.m. Once a daily limit of applications is reached, the system will close. The department advises travelers to try again another day if they get a message saying they can’t start their applications.

This beta release will last for the next several months, and the State Department will gradually increase the number of daily application while monitoring the system’s performance in real time.

Current processing times are the normal six to eight weeks. The online system is not available to applicants who need expedited service or urgent travel options.

The online renewal portal also has some other limitations, so you should check your eligibility before attempting to renew your passport online.
