Ryanair Buying 75 More 737 Max Jets
Boeing 737 Max seems to be back on track to take to the skies once again after the March 2019 grounding that followed two fatal crashes that killed 346 people. Boeing won approval last month from the Federal Aviation Administration for the plane to carry passengers once again. The European authorities also gave it thumbs up earlier. Boeing now just needs to wait for clearance from several regulators worldwide before getting back to business.
The news has seen several airlines placing orders for the jet. Now Ryanair is buying 75 additional 737 Max jets from Boeing, by far the largest order since the grounding last year. The largest discount airline in Europe, Ryanair already had an order for 135 of the Max aircraft, but had not taken any deliveries before production halted. Ryanair has a fleet of 466 aircraft, with 440 of those being the an earlier version of the 737.
“The Boeing MAX is a fabulous aircraft with more seats, more leg room, lower fares, lower fuel consumption, and it sets incredible environmental standards, including 40% less noise and lower CO2 emissions,” Ryanair’s Group CEO Michael O’Leary said. “We hope to take delivery of at least 50 of these aircraft in 2021, subject to Boeing recovering its manufacturing output to deliver them,” he added.
Before this order, Boeing had reported orders for a total of 42 737 Max jets, spread across multiple airlines since the grounding.
