Shanghai Disneyland Closed Coronavirus
A virus which has been traced back to a wildlife market in Wuhan, China is continuing to spread and it has government officials concerned. The Chinese New Year celebration begins tomorrow and is followed by a “Golden Week” which is the busiest for travelers in the country.
Chinese New Year is one of the busiest times at Shanghai Disneyland Resort as well, however it looks like the entire resort is now closed due to fears of the virus continuing to spread. On their English website, the resort posted the following:
In response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak and in order to ensure the health and safety of our guests and Cast, Shanghai Disney Resort is temporarily closing Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown including Walt Disney Grand Theatre and Wishing Star Park, starting January 25, 2020. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and be in close contact with the local government, and we will announce the reopening date upon confirmation.
Shanghai Disney Resort will assist in the refund for guests who have purchased tickets for admission to Shanghai Disneyland, have booked a resort hotel, or have booked tickets for Beauty and the Beast Mandarin Production through the original ticket purchase channel, and we will introduce the detailed procedure and guidelines via the resort’s official platforms as soon as possible.
We wish our guests a healthy and happy Spring Festival!

A Good Decision – Bad Timing
This certainly isn’t a complete surprise, although it had to be a hard decision to close going into the busiest time of year for the Shanghai Disney Resort. I’m also glad to see that Disney and the Shanghai Disney Resort management are taking guest safety into account considering how easy it is potentially for a virus to spread in crowded place like a theme park.
Hong Kong Disneyland Take Precautions
According to @TDRTweets on Twitter, Hong Kong Disneyland is taking some precautions as well despite remaining open during Chinese New Year and the Golden Week celebration.
We are recieving reports although unable to confirm that Hong Kong Disneyland has as a precaution suspended all face character greetings with the likes of Moana, Tinkerbell and others. The app shows no current waiting times for these characters.

Economic Impact on Asian Disney Parks?
With Shanghai Disney Resort closed and the Hong Kong and Tokyo parks heavily influenced by Chinese tourism I wonder what the economic impact of this Coronavirus will be. It couldn’t have come at a worse time considering the upcoming holiday week is the busiest for travel in China. I suspect we will see fairly large economic impacts on these three resorts with Shanghai getting hit the hardest.
Bottom Line
While this is no doubt a trying time for a lot of people as they work to stop the spread of this disease which has already killed dozens, I think it will also be somewhat bad for Disney. Hopefully the Chinese government can get this under control soon to prevent further deaths and bring Disney magic back to the mainland.
What do you think the economic impact of closing Shanghai Disney Resort will be?
