Visitors Need to Sign Drug Awareness Waiver in Mexican Hotspots
The government of Quintana Roo and the local hotel associations has said they will require tourists to sign a a waiver confirming they understand local regulations regarding consumption and transportation of illegal substances. The document informs visitors that those acts are crimes that will be penalized.
Reportur.com reports that the anti-drug campaign was launched ahead of spring break to combat the expected spike of holiday arrests. Tourists must sign it the document upon arrival at hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Tulum, Chetumal, Mahahual, and Riviera Maya, where it has already been implemented.
The campaign also includes ads that feature prison imagery to convey the message of the dangers that buying and selling drugs. In one of the most common ads, you can see a woman behind bars with a text that is in English that says “Don’t turn your vacation into a permanent stay.”
Travel Pulse reports that besides the campaign to inform visitors, uniformed soldiers and police officers have increased their presence in popular vacation destinations.
