Need to Know

Here are some facts about the cards you should know:

  • Southwest points are often worth around 1.4 cents each towards airfare.
  • These cards are known to be subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule.

Eligibility

These products are not available to either:
  • (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapids Rewards® Credit Card, or
  • (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.

Companion Pass

The Companion Pass is a great deal.  When you have a companion pass you can designate someone to fly for free with you on every Southwest flight.  This includes cash flights or award flights  All you need to do is pay the $11.20 taxes in fees roundtrip for domestic flights and $100 or so for international flights.

You can change your designated companion up to 3 times per year not including your first designation.  You must complete all companion designated flights before you can change it though.  So if you have a flight scheduled for April and then another one for May, with a different companion, you have to finish the April flight before changing your companion.  But you can book your ticket for the May flight and as long as there is one seat open your companion flies free. No matter the cost of the ticket!

Conclusion

These are good offers on all three cards and are especially useful to get the Southwest Companion Pass. For frequent Southwest flyers the Southwest Priority card is probably the best personal card with all of the added perks you get and the Southwest credit. For more infrequent flyers the Southwest Plus Card is the best fit in my opinion since the annual fee is very manageable. Keep in mind that the new offers get you the Companion Pass for one year only.

Some people may prefer to wait for a better offer to earn the Companion Pass for almost two years. If you wait until the end of the calendar year to apply, and earn the welcome offer early in the following calendar year, you can essentially get the Companion Pass for two years. This also often comes with a bigger bonus of points so you would end up with more Rapid Rewards points too. Some may prefer the simplicity of this offer, can not get a business card to make the two year plan work or have a lot of Southwest flights upcoming where the modified two year approach could make sense.

For the modified two year approach you could pair this offer up with a Southwest Performance Business Card offer. After completing the spending for both offers, and earning the welcome offers, you would have earned 120,000 Rapid Rewards points. That is only 5,000 points short of earning the Companion Pass for the rest of 2023. The perk of going this route is you earn the Companion Pass earlier with the personal card offer.  You could also take your time on the Business card offer since you would already have the Companion Pass this year.
