Southwest Will Now Refund Early Boarding Fees
Southwest Airlines is famous for cheap prices and not assigning seats. You get on the plane and sit wherever you see an empty seat. But the airline also offer an early boarding option called EarlyBird Check-In. You pay a premium of $15 or more each way per passenger. You get automatic check-in, better boarding position and earlier access to overhead bins.
That early boarding fee has now been a big issue with many flights cancelled due to tghe coronavirus outbreak. Southwest is very generous with refunding cancelled flights, but they have a no-refund policy for EarlyBird fees, unless the airline cancels your flight. Passengers who canceled their flights have not received a refund or travel credit for the EarlyBird fee they paid.
Finally, on Thursday Southwest decided to start refunding these fees. Now passengers with travel dates between March 1st and May 31st who cancel reservations, can request a credit for EarlyBird fees paid. The fee will be refunded in the form of a travel voucher that expires after one year. USA Today says that one voucher will be issued for all the EarlyBird fees paid on the same reservation and not in each passengers’ name.
