Southwest Reveals Elite Perks for Assigned Seating

Southwest Airlines is making major changes to improve profitability. One of those changes is the introduction of assigned seating in 2026.

Now the airline has shared more details on these changes, and has revealed some new perks that elite members can look forward to. The details were revealed in a message from CEO Bob Jordan.

The airline will begin selling flights with seat assignments in the second half of 2025 for travel in the first half of 2026. The boarding process will be similar to what it is today. You’ll board in order of position numbers and line up by signage displayed on stanchions within the gate area.

Those with Southwest A-List elite status will have a few perks when it comes to seating. They get early access to to reserve their spot in line, 36 hours before departure.

Basic A-list elites will be able to select up front standard seats at the time of booking. These are seats that will soon cost extra for non-elites. They will also have the option to choose an extra legroom seat within 48 hours of departure, only if available, at no additional cost.

A-List Preferred members on the other hand will be able to select all available seats, including extra legroom, if available, at no additional cost.

There’s also good news for Companion Pass members. They will have the ability to select an available seat for the designated Companion, and elite status seating benefits will extend to companion.

What’s Not Changing

Southwest has reassured customers that it will still offer two free checked bags for every passenger, regardless or ticket type.

All Rapid Rewards members will also continue to earn and redeem Rapid Rewards points at the same rate.
