Staples Mastercard Gift Card Rebate Deal

I love me some Staples gift card deals. Following a longish drought, Staples gave us a Visa and a Mastercard rebate back in March and they return next week with another easy rebate on Mastercard gift cards! Let’s take a look.

The Deal

Buy $300 of MasterCard® Gift Cards and save $20 after easy rebate.

Key Terms

  • Valid 4/24/16–4/30/16.
  • In store only.

Interesting Omissions

Every past Staples Mastercard rebate deal has come with the rebate in the form of a Staples gift card. This time that wording isn’t mentioned, so it will be interesting to see if you have a choice between a Staples gift card and some other form of payment. Also, the language doesn’t mention a limit of 1, however we will need to wait until the rebate form comes out on Sunday to see if that was just an error or if the limit has been changed. (Easy Rebates always have some sort of a limit in my experience.)

Maximizing the Deal

This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores. This won’t combine with the recent $25 Amex Offer since it is in-store only and the offer is online only. (This will work with the 5% back Amex Offer though.)

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math:

  • Cost: $413.90
  • Minus Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: -$6.10
  • UR Points Earned: 2,070

You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.

Mastercard gift cards sold by Staples are issued by U.S. Bank and are pin-enabled. For more info, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

It is really nice that Staples bring back another rebate deal and I’m interested to see if anything has indeed changed or if the person who wrote the terms was just lazy. While these aren’t the most lucrative deals given the relatively low limits, they do represent a fairly easy way to generate points and a small profit. For some, liquidating these Mastercards may be tougher than before, but this deal is still going to be solid for many of you.
