State Department Warns Against Traveling to Japan
The State Department has issued a travel advisory warning Americans against travel to Japan, where Covid-19 infection rates are rising. This comes just two months before Tokyo hosts the delayed Summer Olympic Games. Attending the Olympics was already quite difficult, since organizers have said there will be no international tourists at the Games.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Japan due to COVID-19. That means “a very high level of COVID-19 in the country.” The travel advisory issued Monday doesn’t mention the Summer Olympic Games.
“Travelers should avoid all travel to Japan,” the CDC said. “Because of the current situation in Japan even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to Japan. If you must travel to Japan, get fully vaccinated before travel.”
Covid-19 numbers have been rising in Japan as the government has begun vaccinating health care workers and those 65 or older. The country counts 716,000 cases overall and 12,000 deaths. In the last seven days there have been 36,000 new Covid-19 cases and 779 deaths.
Japan is preparing to welcome 11,000 athletes from 200 nations and territories for the Summer Olympic Games.

So Japan is closed to foreigners, wonder if Biden and company realize that? Unlikely to change until 2022, all of Asia is backsliding, reminds me of the USA in May 2020. Does this mean our Olympians should avoid the trip? It certainly means the government doesn’t put much stock in the efficacy of vaccines. Japan joins the other global hotspots like Antarctica.
