5X Fuel Points on Amex, Sears, and Nike Gift Card Purchases

Stop & Shop and Giant have a new promotion that can earn you fuel points on select gift cards purchases. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

Earn 5x Gas Rewards Points when you purchase American Express, Nike, or Sears gift cards with your store card.

Key Terms

  • Offer valid 6/2/17 to 6/8/17
  • Must use your Stop&Shop/Giant card

Maximizing Offer

Gift card purchases don’t normally earn fuel points, but through this promotion, you get 5x. Make sure to use the right credit card to maximize your rewards. Amex Blue Cash Preferred will give you 6% at grocery stores and  you can also get 5% with Amex Old Blue Cash or Chase Freedom this quarter.

Gar Rewards

These gas rewards used to be better, but these deals could still get you cheap gas. Every 100 points are worth $0.10 off per gallon on your fill up of up to 20 gallons. If you buy a $500 Amex gift card for example, you would receive 2,500 points.

If you buy more than one gift card, you’ll obviously get more points but you can only redeem up to 1500 points per transaction in some areas, which is $1.50 off per gallon. Gas Rewards points are valid for 30 days from the day they are earned so make sure you do your calculation and rack up just as many fuel points that you are able to use up.

Points can be redeemed at Stop & Shop gas stations and at participating Shell locations.

Conclusion

This is a great deal for people who drive a lot since it get’s you cheap gas, but Amex gift cards are not the easiest to deal with. We often see only 2X fuel points on Amex gift cards (and Visa and Mastercard), so this 5X is pretty rare.

Previously some locations didn’t allow gift card purchases with credit cards but it now explicitly states in the ad that they now accept credit cards for the purchase of gift cards.

  1. Here are the reasons why this deal is not worth it to me:

    1) My gas tank holds only 9.5 gallons empty

    2) Only certain Shell stations participate (not all) and while I do pass one when I drive around, it is almost impossible to make sure that my gas tank is empty when I get there.

    3) The price of gas is almost 35 cents more at the Shell station than the Speedway station 1 mile away.

    4) The American Express gift cards do not allow you to go online and add a name and address for online purchases (the Visa and Mastercards allow you to do this.) You used to be able to call them and add the name and address to the card but the last time I called they told me the card didn’t need a name and an address to be used online (the package says the same thing). However, when I tried to use it online it wouldn’t work at many of the merchants.

And another word of caution, if you don’t use all your points at once the workers at the Shell station can steal your points. I’m not sure how, but when I did this deal around 2 years ago, my card was supposedly used at the same gas station the next day and the day after that using up all my points. (The only time the card was out of my hand was when I handed it to the gas attendant for 2 minutes). I called numerous times the Stop and Shop gas rewards number and each time they said they would look into it and nothing was ever done. Finally, after weeks of calling the, I just gave up.

  2. Bulletpoint below is patently incorrect.

•Offer valid only on Visa gift card purchases

It’s only valid on AMEX GC purchases. I just picked one up for 2500 fuel points. Big difference than a VGC which had 2x fuel points last week.

  3. No, Shawn, your math is off! This is an AMAZING promotion. VGC’s & AGC’s have always been 2x on promotion, including the VISA one that ended yesterday. This is 5X! A $500 AGC gets you 2500 points, at my local Giant, with a 25 gallon limit, that’s a 12.5% discount. I count each x as 2.5%. I stored up a $12/gallon discount on the last promotion, enough to last me June & July. Looks like I’ll be selling my co-workers $1 a gallon gas again!
