LAX Now Allows Weed/Marijuana/Pot In Carry On Luggage
In surprising news, LAX now allows you to travel through the airport and board flights with marijuana in your luggage. California legalized marijuana for personal use with Proposition 64 and that now extends to the airport.
Southwest likes to say your bags fly free well now your Mary Jane can fly free too. It is like a weed companion pass for everyone!

According to the LAX website their official LAX Marijuana Policy is as follows:
“While federal law prohibits the possession of marijuana (inclusive of federal airspace,) California’s passage of proposition 64, effective January 1, 2018, allows for individuals 21 years of age or older to possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption. In accordance with Proposition 64, the Los Angeles Airport Police Department will allow passengers to travel through LAX with up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana. However, passengers should be aware that marijuana laws vary state by state and they are encouraged to check the laws of the states in which they plan to travel.”
Even though this is the state law remember that TSA could have an issue with anything over 1 ounce. According to NBC 4 Los Angeles:
“Transportation Security Administration, a federal agency, can still turn people away if they find marijuana since marijuana is illegal under federal law, but if this happens, airport police will not confiscate weed products as long as it doesn’t exceed the state’s legal amount.”
If only this was in place years ago Michael Vick would not have had to hide it in his water bottle.
Warning
Even if it is legal to carry weed on the plane with you at LAX it does not mean it will be legal where you land. The only areas/states with legalized marijuana are:
- California
- Colorado
- Washington
- Oregon
- Nevada
- Washington D.C.
- Maine
- Vermont
- Massachusetts
And even if they are legalized in those states/areas they may not have the same laws and limits as California. So be sure to check out the local laws and airport rules of wherever you are traveling before taking your weed with you.
Conclusion
This seems like a huge headache since most states have not legalized marijuana yet. People are going to board planes to places where they can get into trouble and think they are fine.
Domestic arrivals are also not thoroughly checked upon arrival so this opens the possibility of drug trafficking taking place on our domestic airlines. I personally think they should have waited to put this into place until the Federal Government legalized marijuana, which I think is bound to happen sometime in the future.
