U.S. and Mexico Mutually Agree to Close Border
The U.S. and Mexico have agreed today to temporarily close the border to nonessential travel due to the coronavirus outbreak. The news was announced by President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“As we did with Canada, we’re also working with Mexico to implement new rules at our ports of entry to suspend non-essential travel,” the president said. The closure will be reviews in 30 days.
Essential travel will continue. It includes travel for medical purposes, to attend educational institutions, for emergency response/public health purposes and lawful cross-border trade as per USA Today.
This is a similar move to the U.S. and Canada’s decision on Wednesday to impose travel restrictions between them. Both agreements, with Mexico and Canada, will go into effect on Saturday.
