Uber One Membership

Uber One Membership

Banks have manipulated many of us into using a variety of services thanks to associated credit card benefits.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing if we’re careful consumers of such perks.  Casual cardholders can come out on top, and aggressive ones try to ensure the always do.  Maximizing the Uber credit benefits from the Amex Gold and Platinum is just one such example.  Like many of you, I’ve ensured to squeeze as much out of these benefits as possible the past few years, but I recently opted to buy into something I never have – an annual Uber One membership.  Today, I’m getting into why this made sense in my situation.  But first, let’s review what an Uber One membership enables.

Uber One Membership Highlights

A monthly Uber One membership costs $9.99, and choosing the annual option is $96 – a substantial savings over the monthly rate.  Uber One membership comes with the following primary benefits:

  • Members receive no delivery fee and up to 10% off eligible orders from Uber One-participating restaurants and stores.  This generally requires a $15 minimum order for no delivery fee and up to 10% off from participating non-grocery stores.  There’s a $35 minimum on participating grocery stores to obtain $0 Delivery Fee and 5% off.
  • Members also pick up in 6% Uber One credits on eligible rides.
  • Members occasionally receive Uber One Exclusives including special offers and promotions.

Why I’m Opting for an Annual Uber One Membership

A few reasons led to my decision to buy an annual membership.  Taking these matters collectively, I easily opted for this choice.

Undeniable Savings

Gone are the days of free Uber One memberships falling like autumn leaves.  They’re here and there, but my wife and I haven’t been eligible for any recently.  On a few occasions in the past year, we’ve opted to (gasp) pay for a month of Uber One here or there.  We’ve done so because we would easily save more than $9.99 in a given month, particularly during ones when we’re substantially traveling and using Uber rideshare more.  Other times, we’ve saved more on one large Uber Eats order than the cost of the membership.

Paying with Uber Cash

Individuals can pay for Uber One with available Uber cash in their wallet.  This is particularly noteworthy for credit card rewards enthusiasts since we’ve received monthly Uber cash from Amex Gold and Platinum cards.  Gold cardholders pick up $10 monthly.  Platinum cardholders receive $15 monthly except for December, where they receive $35.  Balances grow even higher when we take into account the multiple cards many of us hold and how we can connect cooperating individuals’ Gold and Platinum cards to the same Uber account.

Naturally, certain Amex cardholders will prefer to buy a monthly or annual membership with Uber cash.  Many of us simply don’t have a need for so much Uber cash in a given month.  This is especially true for individuals holding one or more Platinum cards offering $35 in December.

Membership Promos

Given our multiple Amex Gold and Platinum accounts, I planned to purchase an Uber One annual membership for $96 in December.  But while tapping around in the app, I noticed Uber targeted me for a promo offer – $72 for an annual Uber One membership.  I receive well over this amount monthly from our Amex Gold and Platinum accounts, and I haven’t been eligible for any similar or better deals recently.  I scrapped my December plan and bought into an annual Uber One membership immediately.  Of course, many will have other free or discounted options, often far superior to this.

Conclusion

Meanwhile, I’m happy with my small win:  a better-than-usual annual membership deal which I paid with “free” money from the Amex Gold and Platinum Uber benefits.  Another positive of going this route has been opting into more simplicity.  For the next 12 months, I won’t be fussing with cancelling and subsequently re-joining at the “right” times.  Indeed, avoiding that is worth something to me.  I’ll be interested to see how the next 12 months go.  Barring any major Uber changes, I imagine I’ll go for another annual membership next year, even if I put it off until December.

Did you go for an annual Uber One membership?  Why or why not?
