World of Hyatt Card Free Night Award Spending Will Change Next Year
The World of Hyatt credit card earns an extra free night at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel or resort if you spend $15,000 within a year. But Hyatt seems to have changed how this $15,000 spend requirement for the Free Night Award works.
For now, the annual spending is calculated based on your anniversary date, but soon it will be switched to a calendar year. Here are the terms and how the change will be implemented going forward.
For new accounts opened in 2020, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date until your anniversary date in 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. You will have from the day after your anniversary date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases to earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year. For new accounts opened in 2021, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. Conclusion
This might not be a big deal for everyone, but especially for 2021, you should pay attention to the dates. Accounts opened in 2020 will have until their anniversary date on 2021 to complete their spending and then until December 31 to spend another $15,000 to earn the next Free Night Award. This could be a good thing for those applying for the card now, as they can earn three Free Night Awards within a few months late in 2021 and early 2022.

Gee, a surreptitious change in the wording. This is no surprise at me. None at all. Chase has been burning WoH cardholders out of that second free night the whole time.
The terms for the free night, the terms for all existing cardholders, read like this:
(“Anniversary Year” means the year beginning with
your account open date through the first
statement date after your account open date anniversary,
and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year.)
Chase in fact only awarded the free night to customers who made the $15k in spending by the anniversary date, NOT all those who made the spending by the following statement date, as the fine print reads. A bunch of cardholders got burned out of their free night, even though they followed Chase’s rules, and Chase finally changed the wording.
Thanks for the heads-up.
