WOW Air Expands to Midwest
WOW Air, the Icelandic budget airline, has been rapidly expanding in the United States. They offer sub-$100 fares to Europe one way, sub-$200 return flights. Now they have added one more US destination in the Midwest.
USA Today reports that WOW is set to begin flying from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on July 13. They will fly four weekly flights, one round trip each Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, to its hub near Reykjavik, Iceland. From there, connections will be available to 23 European destinations, including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Frankfurt and Paris. These flights will be services by Airbus A321-300 narrowbody planes.
$99 Fares
Along with the announcement of its new destination, WOW also rolled out sale fares. It will cost just $99 for one-way flights to Iceland and $169 and up for the return leg. If your destination is farther into Europe, then it will cost you $149 and $189 and up for return leg.
I did a quick search on WOW’s website and was able to find some $99 fares, but only starting from September.I’m assuming summer sales were very limited and are already gone.
Fees
WOW’s base fares are usually unbelievable but prepare yourself to pay for any extras and don’t assume anything will be free. WOW Air charges for almost everything, so make sure you go over their list of fees before booking. You’re only allowed a free carry-on item (17x13x10 in./22 lbs), which is very very small. You’ll have to pay for a carry-on bag and checked luggage.
Seat assignment will also cost you, $9.99-$10.99. Check out the full list of fees and charges here.
Conclusion
It’s nice to see WOW Air expanding more and more as it give people around the country a cheap option for flights to Europe. A $270 round trip to Iceland is a great price, if you don’t mind flying on WOW Air and can get by without paying any fees. Make sure to maximize your credit card rewards.
