$15 Fare Sale To/From Washington Dulles
On May 13 Frontier Airlines announced 14 new routes from Washington Dulles International Airport. To celebrate this news, the airline held a $15 fare sale for all flights to/from Dulles. One of the new routes is to Las Vegas, so I decided it would be nice to get in on the sale so that I can review their product like I did with Spirit earlier this year. (A weekend in D.C. was nice motivation as well.)
Soon after the $15 fares went live, Frontier’s website slowed to a crawl. The first time I tried to use the site, it took me 15 minutes to do a simple search which didn’t result in a $15 fare. Without wanting to waste hours on a chance that I might find a $15 fare, I gave up and got a little snarky on Twitter.
Since the decision to try to book a fare was done more on a whim, I went about my day without really thinking about it. Pretty soon after I tweeted, Frontier tweeted one of my followers saying that they were working on resolving the issues. This is a pretty typical response, so I didn’t think much of it.
Then about thirty minutes later, my follower tweeted me to see if had had any luck in booking a ticket. At first I responded that I had not even reattempted to, but then I decided to fire up the old web browser again.
This time the site loaded relatively quickly and before long I had located 3 tickets for $30 round-trip. This was exciting! I even jumped the gun and posted on Twitter that I had the tickets booked.
Unfortunately, shortly after tweeting I reached the final confirmation screen where a message appeared informing me that the tickets were no longer available at that price. I exited the booking screen and did the search again.
Once again the $15 fare showed up and once again I got the error on the final screen. Feeling like a fool, I was determined not to have to retract my previous statement on Twitter.
Time To Adapt
This time I opened up two browser windows and searched for two tickets in window 1 and one ticket in window 2. I knew there was enough availability, because Frontier’s site says when there are only 1 or 2 tickets left at a price. Since it wasn’t saying that, I figured I was safe to buy three tickets as long as I submitted both purchases at the same time.
After typing in all of information and my Arrival card number (I will use Arrival points to reimburse us for the cost of the tickets), I hit submit in both windows simultaneously. 30 seconds later I had two confirmations and a total of three seats booked! We are going to Washington DC later this year for a long weekend.
Conclusion
Getting in on deals is all about persistence and thinking slightly outside of the box. (Good timing helps as well.) I have been doing this for awhile and have gotten in on some great deals and missed out on my share as well.
If I had missed this Frontier sale then life wouldn’t have ended, but it is nice to say I got in on the deal. $30 roundtrip for such a long route is a fantastic price even if it is on Frontier Airlines with their new ultra low cost pricing model.
