Discover’s 1st Quarter 5% Categories

Discover’s 1st quarter bonus categories are now available for registration. This upcoming quarter you can earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Grocery Stores, Drug Stores and Select Streaming Services. These categories should be super easy to maximize!

How It Works

The Discover it card earns 5% cashback on up to the first $1,500 in bonus category spend per quarter. If you are able to fully maximize the benefit then you can earn $75 cash back every 3 months. That’s a total of $300 every year.

Activate

You have to activate the bonus before making your purchases in order to get the 5% back. The 1st quarter bonus categories can be activated now by visiting this page and logging into your account.

Key Terms

Here are the terms that explain which purchases will earn the 5% cashback in the 1st quarter:

  • Grocery Store purchases include those made at supermarkets, meat lockers, bakeries, smaller grocery stores, and grocery delivery services. All purchases made at Walmart, Target, convenience stores, wholesale clubs, discount stores, and supercenters are not eligible.
  • Drug Store purchases include those made at stand-alone drug stores, pharmacies, pharmacies located inside of retail stores, and from online pharmacies. Examples of
  • Select Streaming Service purchases include Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Video, AMC+, Apple Music, Apple TV, Audible, DirecTV Stream, FUBO, Google Play, HBO Max, iHeartRadio, MLB.TV, Pandora, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Showtime, SiriusXM, Sling TV, Spotify, Starz, Vudu, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV. Other popular streaming services may be included. If your subscription is bundled with another product or service, billed by a third party (such as a digital platform, a cable or satellite provider, telecommunications, internet provider or a car manufacturer), the purchase may not be eligible in this category.

Maximizing

Grocery Stores and drug stores like CVS should come in handy to help maximize this upcoming quarter’s 5% bonus. You can find a wide variety of gift cards at those locations, so that will make it easy to complete the $1,500 in spending from January till March 2023. Streaming is also useful, but it’s usually a hassle to change payment methods for all your streaming services.

4th Quarter Reminder

As a reminder Discover is paying 5% on Amazon Digital Wallet purchases in the 4th quarter (through December 31) which again, should be easy to maximize for almost anyone.

Get the Card

If you don’t have the Discover it card currently, you can earn double cashback your first year. That means you earn 2% cashback on normal purchases and 10% cashback on bonus category purchases.

The card also has a $100 signup bonus.

Conclusion

Discover’s 1st quarter bonus categories should be easy to maximize given the fact that CVS and Grocery Stores are included. Just don’t forget to activate the 1st Quarter bonus categories first, before you make any qualifying purchases, or you won’t earn the bonus cash. Do that now! There’s no reason not to.
