American Express to Retire Old Blue Cash Card
American Express is notifying holders of the Old Blue Cash Card that the legacy product will be discontinued early next year. Affected cardholders will be automatically converted to the Blue Cash Everyday® Card, bringing an end to one of Amex’s longest-running legacy cash back cards.
The original Blue Cash card has long been a favorite among points and miles enthusiasts because of its unique rewards structure. It offers 5% on Everyday Purchases up to $50,000 and 1% on other purchases every reward year. Those purchases include supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and select U.S. drugstores. The 5% earning kicks in after spending $6,500 at 1% cash back.
Because the card has been closed to new applicants for years, many existing cardholders have held onto it specifically for its grandfathered earning rates, myself included.
Here’s the notice that you will find in your latest monthly statement:

Once the conversion takes place on March 4, 2026, cardholders will receive the Blue Cash Everyday Card, which earns:
- 3% on U.S. supermarkets purchases up to $6,000 per calendar year
- 3% on U.S. online retail purchases up to $6,000 per calendar year
- 3% on gasoline purchases at U.S. gas stations up to $6,000 per calendar year
- 1% on all other eligible purchases.
Conclusion
This marks the end of another beloved legacy Amex product. For most consumers, the Blue Cash Everyday will be a decent replacement, but longtime Old Blue Cash cardholders are losing a card with rewards that simply aren’t available anymore.
At least you have until March to earn 5% cash back on your supermarkets, gas and drugstores spending.

This sucks. I’ve had this card since 2004 and it’s been my everyday spend card since opening.
