Amex Limits Charge Cards To 10 Per Person
American Express has an unofficial limit of 5 credit cards. That is the total number of American Express credit cards that you can hold at a time. The limit sometimes varies anywhere from 4 to 6 credit cards. But until now there has been no set limit on the number of American Express Charge Cards you can have at once, as far as we know.
Now a new data point from reddit shows that there might now be a limit. The information comes from a representative and a cardholder that was repeatedly turned down for a new charge cards. You are limited to 10 total charge cards now.
Based on the Amex rep, they have “recently implemented a 10 charge cards per account rule similar to the 5 lending card rule.” So if you already have 10 charge cards, you would have to drop to 9 cards in order to apply for a new one.
Conclusion
The limit seems reasonable, especially when compared to the 5 credit card limit. A limit of 10 should be enough for you to have every American Express charge card available. But it might become an issue if you have multiples of the same charge card.
