New Amex Spending Offers – Up To 5% Back on Restaurant Spend

I received an email from American Express last night for my Aspire card which had an interesting spending offer attached.  They were offering me 2,000 Hilton Honors points for every $200 in restaurant spend I put on the card.  I could earn this up to 5 times or up to 10,000 points.  Vinh from Miles per Day had an offer for a straight $10 cash back as well.

Terms of the Offer

Here are the terms of the offer:

  • Enroll for the offer – the link for my Aspire card.
  • Earn 2,000 Bonus Points (or $10) after you spend $200 in purchases on your card at your favorite U.S. restaurants.
  • Earn the bonus up to 5 times
  • Ends October 31, 2019.

Crunching the Numbers

If I could max this out and spend exactly $1,000 on restaurants over the next few months I would earn a 10,000 Hilton Honors points bonus.  I would earn another 7,000 Hilton Honors points on the spend since restaurants code as 7X with the Aspire card.  That is a total of 17,000 points on $1,000 in spend.  I value Hilton Honors points at around $0.0045.  Some people value them closer to $0.004 and others closer to $0.005 so this is a good middle ground.  At a $0.0045 valuation that is a return of 7.65% on my spend.  Not too bad!

If you received the cash back offer you would earn 5% from the offer plus whatever the card normally earns on restaurant spend.

Final Thoughts

I love these offers from American Express.  They truly reward their customers with awesome spending offers and pretty great authorized user spend offers too.  They do it better than anyone in my opinion.

Having said that I am not sure if I will take advantage of this since I am working on hitting $15K on my Surpass and my World of Hyatt card for the free night.  Both of those earn bonus points for restaurant spend and including the free night bonus means my return is about the same as this offer.  If I wasn’t working on those then I would jump on this for sure!
