Boingo Amex Partnership Ending?

Boingo Amex Partnership Ending?

No Free WiFi for you! According to a rumor on the myFICO forums American Express is ending the Boingo WiFi benefit beginning in May. I only call it a rumor since I can’t find another original source and the Amex/Boingo sites do not have the language yet or at least I couldn’t find it. The poster does seem to have some credibility on that site FWIW.

Anyway, here are the details:

Effective May 1, 2019, Boingo Preferred Plan will no longer be a benefit on the Platinum Card®. Card Members who are enrolled in Boingo Preferred Plan as of 4/30/2019, will continue to have access to this benefit until 12/31/2019

On the surface it might seem like a benefit that you’ll never use or miss, but I suspect there are many people who use this. While I haven’t used my Boingo account in a short while, I have used it quite often over the years at various airports and even in public areas around the world.

Will I Miss It? FOMO?

Fortunately internet is becoming more common and so is global data and roaming. For that reason I do suspect less people will use this over time and thus I don’t think I’ll miss it. That is until I’m in that one place that has no way to get internet except to pay Boingo. Then it is going to suck!

You know now that it is going away you want to sign-up to try it right? Of course you do! Fortunately it’s super easy to sign-up. Just checkout the post above!

Conclusion

As American Express continues to see pressure in the premium card space we see them tweaking benefits to make sure they are appealing to customer’s needs. In this case perhaps the need for premium WiFi is dying out so I don’t have a huge problem with it. On the other hand, this is one less thing that we now get for that annual fee…
