British Airways Avios Site Currently Not Showing American Airlines Award Space

If you have tried to access your British Airways Executive Club account or book awards through the Avios portal over the last few weeks, it has probably been a frustrating experience.

The British Airways Avios program underwent a scheduled downtime in late November for four days. But that led to tech issues where members were not able to access account for almost two weeks. Those problems continue even today for some Avios members who can’t access their accounts or have very limited functionality even if they can get in.

However, if you are able to log in and search for awards, you might notice that you don’t get any results for American Airlines award tickets. TPG reports that verified award space on American Airlines flights is not showing up when you try to “Book With Avios” on the British Airways website.

What’s strange is that other partners are showing on the Avios search engine. So this is not a systemwide issue for travel partner award space. This should be fixed soon I hope, but for now you will have to do things old school. Pick up a phone and call British Airways.

Conclusion

The British Airways Avios has had some big issues over the last couple of weeks. Now the latest problem is booking American Airlines flight with Avios. You can’t book online so your only option is to check award space using an Oneworld search tool and then call British Airways to book. The phone number is 800-452-1201.

Calling is never fun, so hopefully they get this issue resolved soon.

  1. Bad typo in the third paragraph: “now” should instead read “not”. As always, proofread in addition to spell check.
Maybe the problem is not with the Avios portal, but instead with AA. AA award flights do not appear to be bookable via BA, nor via Qantas. Nor were any AA award flights available via Cathay Pacific during my two calls to their normally very competent Hong Kong reservation agents. Neither for close-in flights nor for flights 10-11 months out. Neither for economy flights nor business class. All AA flights I tried to book through these One World partner airlines showed as available at the saver level on the AA website, but not available to be booked through partner airline sites. I didn’t check Expert Flyer, though.

  2. BA tech team sucks whatever you can imagine.
if you need to book AA flight with avios now, move it to Iberia and book there.
