Cancel American AAdvantage Awards Online

If you plan your travel ahead, you likely have many flights booked already that might need to be rebooked, or canceled. This process usually requires you to call the airline, and that has been more time consuming recently with everything that is going on.

But at least one airline is making the cancellation process easier. For a limited time, you can cancel American AAdvantage award tickets online and get your miles refunded as well. Until now, if you canceled AAdvantage awards online, that would just cancel the flight, but not get you your miles back.

The new process now also refunds miles for AAdvantage members canceling award tickets. There’s no need to call American Airlines, your miles will automatically be reinstated within 48 hours.

This is valid for tickets purchases through May 31, 2020, for travel through September 30, 2020. We could see this extended though.

Keep in mind that the process will not work if you booked through a third party such as Expedia, Orbitz etc, or with points through Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal or Amex Travel. There are also some more restrictions for this to work. It must be a single passenger booking, using own AAdvantage miles to book award. Works for American Airlines flights only, where no changes have been made to the itinerary.
